The French Way

The French Way, developed as a Jacobean route in the eleventh century, is one of the oldest and most popular walking paths in the world. Historic cities such as Pamplona, Logroño, Burgos and León are interspersed with smaller towns along the way, rich in tradition and hospitality. Architectural marvels of the Spanish Romanesque and Gothic periods are found along this route, where they formed settings for famous scenes of epic literature.

The French Way begins in Galicia near O’Cebreiro and continues from there, passing through places and territories mentioned in the "Liber Sancti Jacobi" or "Codex Callixtinus," the first guidebook of the twelfth century, created to help pilgrims on the Way. Travelers can experience this tour on one of several levels: as a unique opportunity to see some of the oldest and finest architecture in the world, along with a number of monasteries and holy buildings fascinating even to the casual visitor, or as a time of heightened spiritual awareness and reflection, surrounded by and immersed in millennia of powerful religious history.

Itinerary

Day 1 Santiago De Compostela – Samos

We arrive in Santiago, travel to Samos and settle in for the night in local rural houses.

Day 2 Samos – Sarria – Ferreiros

We begin our path in Samos, home to several ancient monasteries, and walk in the direction of Sarria, a lovely town brimming with natural beauty and romantic architecture. We continue along the road to Teiguin, where we travel along the embankment to reach Pascais. We continue in the direction of Gorolfe, following the signs to Reiriz, and on to A Guiada. The alternative route through Samos joins with the path of San Xil to get to Sarria, and we will conclude this leg of the journey in Ferreiros. (km 25/m 15)

Day 3 Ferreiros – Portomarin – Ligonde

From Ferreiros, we proceed in the direction of Portnanrin, where the way follows the direction of Rente along a well-maintained path. Here we pass Mercado da Serra, Leiman, and Peruscallo before reaching Portomarín, a city with fantastic tourist attractions. The historic center of the town is made entirely of stone and offers a variety of options for travelers. We complete this part of the journey in Ligonde. (km 23/m 14)

Day 4 Ligonde – Palas De Rei – Melide

From Ligonde, the road enters into the territories of the town of Palas de Rei, a traditional Spanish town with lush fields and greenery. After passing through Palas de Rei, we will cross the state highway to enter a path that leads to Carballal and then to San Xulian. (km 23/m 14)

Day 5 Melide – Arzua – O’Pino

We follow the French Way out of Melide, continuing along the well-marked path to reach Arzúa, the land of excellent cheese. Once we have explored Arzua, we continue along the path to O’Pino. (km 33/m 20)

Day 6 O’Pino – O’Pedrouzo – Santiago

After leaving O’Pino, we arrive at O’Pedrouzo and proceed into the next town, Santo Anton, where we begin the climb to the town of Santiago. In Lavacolla, very close to Monte do Gozo, the path passes through dense urban areas, rife with exotic sights and sounds, reaching the Cathedral through the colorful neighborhood of San Lázaro. (km 20/m 12)

Day 7 Santiago De Compostela

We will have a full day of sightseeing in this beautiful Jacobean town, an opportunity to explore, reflect and delight in both the natural and man-made beauty surrounding us. We will have a chance to attend the famous Pilgrim's Mass celebrated inside the Cathedral, and time to visit Compostela at the Casa del Deàn.

Day 8 Santiago De Compostela

We will check out following breakfast, but you can extend your stay as long as you wish, or take the opportunity to join one of our pilgrimages to Fatima, Lourdes, or Rome. Please contact us for further details.
